What Is Sport & Exercise Psychology?
Sport and exercise psychology is the scientific study of how psychological factors affect performance in sport and physical activity — and conversely, how participation in sport and exercise affects psychological development and well-being.
It bridges two questions:
How does the mind influence athletic performance? How does physical activity influence the mind?
Two Sides of the Field
Performance Enhancement
This side focuses on helping athletes and performers reach their potential. It examines mental factors such as motivation, concentration, confidence, and the ability to manage pressure.
Exercise and Well-being
This side explores how physical activity affects mental health — including its role in reducing anxiety, depression, and stress, and its contribution to overall quality of life.
Key Practitioners
Sport Psychologist
A licensed psychologist with specialized training in sport and performance. Qualified to diagnose and treat clinical mental health conditions in addition to performance work.
Mental Performance Consultant (MPC)
A practitioner focused specifically on psychological skills training for performance — without necessarily holding a clinical license. Works with athletes, coaches, and teams to develop mental skills.
Most applied work in sport settings is done by MPCs rather than clinical sport psychologists.
